The mannequin set

The Mannequin Set with poetry by Katie Byford premiered in July of 2021 at Royal College of Music in London and was commissioned by soprano Catherine Hooper and tenor Harry Grigg.

The set begins in the still waters of Swan Lake, which revisits the myth of Leda. The theme of water’s transformative power is carried through in the ocean with the protean encounter of Salt Creatures; in the final piece, Mannequin, Pygmalion’s creation returns to her original form at the bottom of a river. Moving through sharp-edged violence and foaming passion in the solo pieces, water represents a lack of control over the body which the titular duet subverts in the story of a statue reclaiming her objectivity through drowning.

Feel free to take a listen down below. Featuring (in order of appearance): Swan Lake, Salt Creatures, and Mannequin.

Catherine Hooper, Soprano & Harry Grigg, Tenor

Emily Hoh, piano
